Exclusion Recommendations
No person having an infectious or contagious disease shall be admitted to any public, parochial,
or private school, or to any other public place according to Sedgwick County Department of
Community Health.
A child who has any of the following diseases shall be excluded from school, other public places
and contact with other children until a release is obtained from a licensed healthcare provider.
1.
Whooping Cough
2.
Diphtheria
3.
Meningitis
4.
Tuberculosis
5.
Typhoid Fever
5.
Any unusual disease
For the following diseases, the child shall be excluded according to the following regulations.
Exclude:
Readmit:
Fever with or without other symptoms
Fever-free for 24 hours without fever
reducing medication
Eyes inflamed with purulent discharge
Pinkeye
Drainage has stopped; or treated for 24
hours with antibiotic; or physician note
stating non infectious
Drainage from ear
Drainage has stopped
Lice
When treated and free of lice and lice
eggs within ¼ inch of the scalp
Diarrhea (2 or more loose or watery stools)
Diarrhea-free for 24 hours or per disease

Vomiting
Free of vomiting for 24 hours
Skin lesions:
Athlete’s
Foot
Must keep shoes and socks on for all
activities
Hand, Foot & Mouth
Fever free and no open lesions
Herpes
Not allowed to participate in activities
where skin to skin contact occurs until 5
days after lesions have crusted or dried
Impetigo
Treated for 24 hours with antibiotic;
cover open wounds; food handlers
excluded until purulent lesions healed
Rash
Consider exclusion pending physician
evaluation
Ringworm
When receiving treatment; exclude from
physical activities with skin to skin
contact until lesions are healed
Scabies
Until treatment has begun with scabicide
Shingles/Chickenpox
Exclude until lesions are dried and
crusted, usually 5 days after rash onset
Streptococcal disease
Exclude until 24 hours after antibiotic
therapy has Strep throat begun and
without fever
Varicella
When all lesions have formed scabs or
crusts; usually 5 days
A child may be excluded for an additional period of time if the principal or other school
personnel feel it is necessary for the child’s protection or for the protection of the other
children. If a child is excluded because of a suspected communicable disease, documentation
from a licensed healthcare provider is required for readmittance.
